Shakira is a well-known, multi-talented celebrity from Colombia. You’ve had the chance of seeing her everywhere, either singing or dancing, but usually both! Her song was “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” – an official song for the FIFA World Cup in 2010. You might remember the tune even today because it’s the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. Her career is still on the rise, despite having a happy family life with her husband, Gerard Pique, and two children. Shakira has received five MTV Video Music Awards, three Grammy, and twelve Latin Grammy Award and sold millions of records in the United States alone.

It all started way back in 1977 in Colombia when she was an only child to her parents. Shakira’s name in Arabic means grateful, and she certainly lives up to her name. Despite having millions of fans all over the social media, and a big presence, she has remained humble, and takes part in charities, and ever started her own. Her love for music started when her father bought a typewriter, and she started writing poetry on her own. The poetry evolved into songs gradually, as Shakira was able to express how she feels.
Her fame started when she was 10, and continued up to the age of 13 when she was introduced to a local theater producer, Monica Ariza. Monica played a key part in her career after setting her up with Sony Colombia executives, which signed Shakira to record three albums. Her first album was Magia and was recorded when she was 13, like we previously mentioned, and was a collection of songs she wrote herself, in pop-rock ballad genre. However, only 1200 copies were sold, and she decided to go for a second a little later, called Peligro. Controversy followed, as Shaki had issues with the production, and refused to advertise and promote it, and it was considered a commercial failure.
She decided to take a hiatus from music, and graduate from high school while taking a role in TV series called The Oasis. Shakira couldn’t stay away from music for a long time, and in 1995 she came back to record a debut album under a major recording company, Sony Music. It was called Pies Descalzos, and released in 1996, reaching the fifth place on U.S. Billboard Top Latin Albums, but 186th on U.S. Billboard 200 list. However, that started Shakira’s international tours and brought her to where she is today. All the years after 2005 were a huge success for her, both on a professional and a personal level. In 2005 she released her sixth album, and we know a song called La Tortura from there.
The album was well received and brought Shakira four Latin Grammy Awards. The year 2008 was extremely important, as she became fourth top-earning music industry female artist, which lead her to sing a $300 million a year contract with Live Nation, for her to tour around the world for the next ten years. In 2013 and 2014 she was a coach in The Voice, and her music career plans were delayed by her first son’s pregnancy. However, Shakira continued her success by teaming up with Rihanna to record a single called “Can’t Remember to Forget You”, which was a big success, and performed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Like any other popular singers including Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Beyonce, Shakira also have numerous albums and songs written and sang by her. The popular songs like the 2010 FIFA World cum theme song, Waka Waka, made her the favorite singer of many music lovers. Her contributions to the music industry shine even after years of releasing those amazing songs.
Fast forward to 2016 and Shakira was preparing her eleventh studio album, later called El Dorado, with Colombian singers Carlos Vives and Malume. In 2017 she released “Me Enamoré” and “Perro Fiel”. She announced a World Tour in June of 2017, too, sponsored by Rakuten. Even though it began, she had voice strain problems and had to postpone it. Later that year she announced she had a vocal cold hemorrhage and had to rest her voice until 2018. Today, it’s still not known when exactly the tour starts, but we’re happy for Shakira taking care of herself and her voice. She had a second son with Gerard Pique, called Sasha Pique Mebarak, and family should come first. Whenever it happens, fans are waiting with open arms for her comeback.
