Chris Gayle another very famous cricketer next to Sachin Tendulkar. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica on the 21st of September, 1979. However, he started very young and now has quite a lot to brag about. For example, he is well-known for hitting sixes often, and in 2012 he was the first player to hit a six off a first ball in a Test match. Unlike his Indian rival, he is not retired and shows no signs of stopping. In 2015 “The Chris Gayle Academy” was opened with the intent of helping children get involved with sports early.

Chris Gayle’s career started when he was very young. It all happened at the Lucas Cricket Club in Kingston, Jamaica, and Gayle repeatedly said that if it weren’t for Lucas, he’d be on the streets. His international career started at the youth international level first, and then it moved to first-class, a logical progression. In 1998 and 1988 he was on the rise, playing his first One Day International as well as his first Test Match. It was clear right from the start that Chris Gayle is a destructive batsman, and is the most effective playing square of the wicket.
Even though his international career was progressing, it wasn’t the fastest rise. However, near the end of 2002, he managed to achieve three centuries against India. This meant he became the third West Indian that scored over 1000 runs in one calendar year, Vivian Richards and Brian Lara being the other two. Then 2005 came along, and Gayle was dropped for the first Test against South Africa with six more players. The reason was sponsorship issues – they had a deal with Cable and Wireless, who sponsored West Indian cricket. But because some of those players have also gotten a deal with Digicel, their rival, it was requested they dropped Cable and Wireless agreement, which caused trouble.
Chris Gayle managed to find a common ground, and was back for the second Test, although he was charged with a conduct contrary to the spirit of cricket, but was later found not guilty. He was also fined 30% of the match fee later, which lead to Chris Gayle getting angry and criticising West Indies Cricket Board in 2007. For that, they had to give him an official warning. But there must’ve been something good because he’s still playing, right? Well, yes, especially Twenty20 cricket. In 2009 he signed with Western Australia Warriors but was left out of the initial part of T20 tournament in 2011.
In his debut and later games, he’s shown how good he really is, and after scoring a few centuries, he was given an Orange Cap Award for scoring the most runs in the tournament – the record was 608 runs in 12 matches. This led to Chris Gayle receiving five Man of the Match awards, as well as Player of the Tournament for his incredible play. Zimbabwean franchise noticed his success and managed to sign him for Stanbic Bank 20 Series tournament in 2011 and 2012. This gave him enough practice for the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash tournament and he was signed with Sydney Thunder.
As you know, Chris Gayle has gotten a daughter recently and called her Blush. However, cricket is his passion, of course, and after a little break he dusted off his bat. Following a signing by Lahore Qalandars in 2016 for $200,000, he faced some back problems, leading to his worst T20 league ever. But in the middle of 2017, he finally reached a milestone of 10,000 runs and was later declared the first player to ever hit 100 T20I sixes. Near the beginning of February 2018, Chris Gayle was bought by Kings XI Punjab for the base price of around $309,000!
Chris Gayle Facts
- He became the first player to have hit a double century in a World Cup in 2015. It happened after he scored 215 runs against Zimbabwe.
- Chris is also the first player to score a century while in an international T20 match. That occurred on September 11th, 2007, when they were playing against South Africa.
- Because he’s so thankful to Lucas, who gave him his first sports beginnings, he decided to open an academy with his name – “The Chris Gayle Academy” in both London and Jamaica. It gives young people with financial problems an opportunity to play sports and live a healthy life, thus helping their own communities.
- In 2012, in a test match against Bangladesh, he broke another record. He was the first player in the history of the test cricket that managed to hit a six off the first ball of the innings.
- Besides his sponsorship problems, just two years ago, in January 2016 he was accused by a female West Indies cricket team staff member. She said he exposed his genitals in a dressing room during the World Cup 2015. He was not found either guilty or innocent.
